The Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prizes are awarded annually for excellence in research. Established in 2011, the Killam PDF Prize is in memory of Izaak Walton Killam and his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam, who together created the Killam Trusts. Two prizes in the amount of $5,000 each are awarded to full-time Postdoctoral Fellows at UBC in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions while at UBC.
Award amount: Two prizes for $5,000 each.
Eligibility
Nominees must be appointed at UBC and have held a full-time postdoctoral fellowship appointment for at least 12 months as of the closing date for nominations. Nominees must be nominated through the Faculty to which they are appointed. In the event of a joint appointment, the nominee and/or nominators must select which faculty through which the postdoc will be nominated.
The Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize can be received only by a full-time UBC-appointed Postdoctoral Fellow at the time of the announcement. The PDF’s appointment must comply with the scope, governing principles, and eligibility criteria set out in University Policy AP10, Postdoctoral Fellows Policy. A Postdoctoral fellow is eligible for only one Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize.

- Complete nomination packages must be submitted to the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Medicine through email med.gradpostdoc@ubc.ca by the internal deadline of November 7, 2024.
- The Faculty of Medicine will select and forward two nominees to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by December 4, 2024.
- The final awardees are selected by a subcommittee within the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Adjudication Procedure
The Graduate and Postdoctoral Education office forms a committee comprising senior faculty members from the Faculty of Medicine. The application packages will be evaluated based on the Killam PDF Research Prize Evaluation Guidelines outlined in the PDFO website. The final decision is made on the recommendation of Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Education.

2023 winner
Dr. Catriona Hippman, Postdoctoral fellow, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Dr. Hippman is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Reproductive Health Program at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Care Centre in the Faculty of Medicine. Her research work aims to elucidate strategies best suited to the Canadian context for the care of women experiencing acute postpartum mental illness, through parallel lines of both qualitative and quantitative inquiry into Canadian and international experiences. By looking at how other countries have approached postpartum care through the use of Parent-Infant Psychiatric Units (PIUs) she hopes to better treat mental illness and improve postpartum care. Dr. Laura Schummers, Postdoctoral fellow, Department of Family Practice
Dr. Laura Schummers’ is a postdoctoral fellow in the Contraception and Abortion Research Team at the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. Her research uses methods from epidemiology and health policy research to determine impacts of health policy and clinical practice on reproductive population health and examines the impact of Canada’s globally unique medical abortion policy on abortion access and health outcomes. She collaborates with clinicians, policymakers, and patients to evaluate and inform improvements to policy and practice based on research findings. Dr. Hudson Reddon, Postdoctoral fellow, Department of Medicine
Dr. Hudson Reddon is a postdoctoral fellow in the BC Centre on Substance Use, Department of Medicine. His research evaluates how changes in cannabis access and use impact substance use trajectories (e.g., injection drug use initiation, addiction treatment engagement) during the opioid overdose crisis. This evidence will be important for informing clinical and public health practice, as well as evaluating Canada’s public health framework for cannabis. Dr. Ryan Hoiland, Postdoctoral fellow, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology, & Therapeutics
Dr. Ryan Hoiland is a postdoctoral fellow with VGH Neurocritical Care Research Group and International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries at the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology, & Therapeutics. His research investigates how to mitigate the injurious influence of reduced oxygen levels (i.e. hypoxia) within the central nervous system (brain & spinal cord).Further, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the formation of a research team associated with Vancouver General Hospital’s intensive care unit which he became part of. Within this group, he investigated the relationship between the immunologic/inflammatory response to COVID-19 and the associated respiratory and brain injuries that occur in critically ill COVID-19 patients. They also conducted studies assessing the role of immunosuppression on respiratory function in critically ill COVID-19 patients and conducted ongoing studies assessing the long-term impact of COVID-19 on respiratory illness.
